What We Believe
Rooted in the historic Christian faith as expressed in the Nicene and Apostles’ Creeds.
Our doctrine is further shaped by the Lausanne Covenant and our commitment to the Church as a living, Spirit-led movement, as articulated in the Reactivating the Church as Movement statement.
Our Statement of Faith
We affirm and celebrate the diversity of the global Church, recognizing that faithful Christian communities exist across denominations, cultures, and traditions. While we do not require uniformity in secondary or tertiary doctrines, our ministry is committed to serving the biblical Church that confesses the core truths of the Christian faith.
The Bible
We believe the Bible, in its entirety, is the infallible, inerrant, and inspired Word of God; it is divine revelation that carries the full weight of God’s authority and to which we are obliged to submit. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Psalm 19:7-11; Matthew 5:18)
The Trinity
We believe within the Godhead there is a unity of three distinct yet fully divine persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; these three are one true, eternal God, the same in substance, equal in power and glory. (Matthew 28:19; John 1:1-3; Acts 5:3-4; 2 Corinthians 13:14)
God
We believe God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth. God is fully omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent, not given to learning or “openness.” (John 4:24; Psalm 90:2; Malachi 3:6; Isaiah 46:9-10; Psalm 147:5)
Jesus Christ
We believe Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man, having two natures inseparably united in one divine person without confusion, mixture, separation, or division. Each nature retains its own attributes. In the incarnation, Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary, lived a perfect life among us, was crucified, dead, and buried, rose on the third day, ascended to heaven, and will come again in glory and judgment. He is the only Mediator between God and man. (John 1:1, 14; Philippians 2:6-11; Hebrews 4:15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Timothy 2:5)
The Holy Spirit
We believe the Holy Spirit is of one substance with the Father and the Son. He eternally proceeds from the Father and the Son, and He dwells in the hearts of believers, effecting their regeneration by His sovereign work alone and operating in their sanctification through ongoing cooperation in obedience. (John 15:26; Titus 3:5; John 3:5-8; Philippians 2:12-13; Galatians 5:22-25)
Creation
We believe God, by the word of His power, created from nothing the heavens and the earth and all that is in them. He further preserves and governs all His creatures and all their actions according to His most holy, wise, and powerful providence. (Genesis 1:1; Hebrews 11:3; Colossians 1:16-17; Psalm 103:19)
Mankind
We believe after God made the other creatures, He created man, both male and female, in His own image, but because Adam sinned and woefully fell in his responsibility, he and his descendants entered into a state of moral corruption and moral inability and became estranged from their Creator, thus deserving death as the punishment for sin. (Genesis 1:26-27; Genesis 3:1-19; Romans 5:12; Ephesians 2:1-3)
We believe that because God created humanity in His own image, male and female, every human being bears intrinsic dignity, worth, and value as a reflection of the Creator. This truth calls us to honor all peoples of every nation, tribe, and language, without partiality or discrimination, as bearers of God’s image, and to love others as Christ commands. Therefore, we reject all forms of ethnocentrism, racism, misogyny, and any ideology or practice that denies, distorts, or diminishes the God-given dignity of any people or culture.
Though the image of God in humanity has been marred by sin, it is not erased, and it finds its ultimate restoration in Jesus Christ, who is the perfect image of God. (Genesis 1:26-27; James 3:9; Acts 17:28-29; Psalm 8:4-8; Genesis 1:28; Matthew 22:37-40; Colossians 1:15; 2 Corinthians 3:18, Revelation 7:9-10)
Atonement
We believe that because all have sinned, atonement must be made in order for man to be reconciled to God. Jesus Christ made a complete atonement for His people through His substitutionary atoning death on the cross. He imputes His righteousness to all believers securing us full redemption for all who repent of their sin and trust in Him alone for salvation. (Isaiah 53:4-6; Romans 3:23-26; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 9:12)
The Law
We believe the moral law perfectly reflects the unchangeable character of God and forever binds all people, believers as well as unbelievers. (Exodus 20:1-17; Matthew 5:17-19; Romans 2:14-15; Romans 7:12)
The Church
We believe Christ has established a visible church, which is called to live in the power of the Holy Spirit under the regulation of the authority of Holy Scripture, preaching the gospel of Christ, administering the sacraments, and exercising discipline. (Matthew 16:18; Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; Matthew 18:15-20)
Christianity & Culture
SMC supports the work of Christian organizations and institutions that confess the final authority of Scripture and the lordship of Jesus Christ, and are committed to the implementation of the social and cultural implications of God’s commandments for the well-being of man and his environment. SMC especially supports those organizations that condemn the murder of defenseless human beings at the moment of conception and that reject unbiblical definitions of gender, sexuality, and marriage. (Micah 6:8; Psalm 139:13-16; Matthew 19:4-6; Romans 1:18-27; Colossians 1:17)
From Confession to Practice
Anchored in truth, sent in love
Shaped by Christian orthodoxy and carried forward in agape love, we serve the Church across cultures and contexts with humility and conviction. Our work moves from shared confession into faithful presence, expressed through partnership, careful listening, and long obedience for the good of Christ’s body.
